If your ceiling is a blank white void (most are), this is your project. A pom-pom mobile adds colour at eye level and above, sways a little when the window’s open, and costs less than a takeaway.

You’ll need

  • An old lampshade frame or embroidery hoop (25–40 cm)
  • 150–200 felt balls in 6–8 colours
  • Strong cotton thread and a long darning needle
  • A strip of striped fabric to wrap the frame (optional)

1. Wrap the frame

Wind the fabric strip around the frame and secure it with a few stitches or a dot of glue. Stripes look great against the round pom-poms.

2. Thread the strands

Cut 12–16 lengths of thread at different lengths (40–70 cm). Push the needle straight through the centre of each felt ball, leaving a 3–4 cm gap between them — tie a small knot under each ball so it stays put.

3. Mix the colours on purpose

Random looks best when it’s planned: avoid putting two of the same colour next to each other, and spread the darker colours evenly around the ring.

4. Tie on and hang

Tie the strands around the frame at equal spacing, alternating long and short. Hang it from a ceiling hook with three threads joined at the top so it hangs level.

Hang it over a bed, a reading chair or a kid’s room — and enjoy the happiest corner in the house. 🌈
