Can a maximalist bedroom still be restful? We think yes — if you choose where the noise goes. In this makeover the walls stayed soft and pale, and three statement pieces do all the talking.

1. The rug sets the palette

Everything started with the colour-block rug: cobalt, sunflower yellow, grass green and hot pink on black. Once it was down, every other choice had an easy test — does it belong to the rug’s family?

2. One giant canvas, leaning not hanging

The pop-art portrait is big enough to read from the doorway. Leaning it against the wall behind the nightstand feels relaxed and means no drilling — renter win. 🙌

3. A mirror that multiplies the colour

The mirrored nightstand reflects the rug and the canvas, so the colour shows up twice without adding anything new. Top it with a spotted lamp shade for a little extra mischief.

Keep the bed graphic, not busy

The black canopy frame draws a clean outline around the bed, and black-and-white gingham adds pattern without adding another colour. Clash on the floor and the walls; keep the bedding simple.

The shopping list

  • Colour-block rug (the splurge)
  • Second-hand mirrored nightstand
  • Large canvas print from an independent artist
  • Gingham duvet set and a spotted lampshade

Total time: one weekend. Total regret: none.
